Nick is one of the most in-demand young orchestrators and arrangers, with projects ranging from new revival orchestrations to special commissions from the stars of the West-End. Recent projects include the 2019 revival of Rags (soon to be re-licensed by MTI with Nick’s new orchestrations) and the 2018 revival of Just So (both for actor-musicians), the vocal and orchestral arrangements for new MT-crossover supergroup The Cardinals, and arranging tracks for several albums including Alice Fearn’s debut Where I’ve Been… Where I’m Going and Sophie Evan’s forthcoming release Icons. Nick’s own show RE:arrangement specifically celebrates the art of arranging and rearranging, and will be performed as a headline act as part of this year’s Floating Festival for Royal Caribbean, with an accompanying studio album to be released.
The Cardinals is a brand new musical theatre supergroup made up of four of the West-Ends’s leading stars: Carrie Hope Fletcher, Celinde Schoenmaker, Ben Forster and Ramin Karimloo. The group has a unique folk-MT crossover sound, characterised by bold reimaginings of musical theatre classics and modern pop with lush vocal harmonies. Nick is their resident MD and arranger. This video is of his arrangement of ‘I Dreamed A Dream’, performed by The Cardinals and the London Musical Theatre Orchestra
RE:arrangement debuted at Live at Zedel in August 2018, went on to a short UK tour in January 2019 and will soon headline the Stages Floating Festival alongside Alfie Boe and Sheridan Smith this October. The show is characterised by bold re-imaginings of musical theatre classics from the sublime to the slightly ridiculous. With One Look becomes a sexy up-tempo, We’ll Gather Lilacs gets a Jonathan Larson-esque rewrite, and in this number from Hamilton the cast give us a glimpse into the show had it been written by Gilbert and Sullivan, Rodgers and Hammerstein and more.
Nick produced new actor-musician orchestrations for Just So for Barn theatre, Cirencester in 2018, and in early 2019 re-orchestrated Stephen Schwartz and Charles Strouse’s Rags with all new material devised in the room with Stephen. This will soon be released by MTI worldwide as the new standard version of the show. In addition to orchestrating for existing shows, Nick writes and orchestrates as an associate artist with Antic Disposition, with whom he has collaborated on UK and European tours of two Shakespeare comedies and a UK production of A Christmas Carol which will receive it’s second production this Christmas, in addition to the release of a studio album.
Nick has arranged for several non-theatrical projects, including two advertising campaigns for TK Maxx (Christmas 2016 and 2017 starring AfterParty a cappella) and a YouTube campaign for CBBC’s relaunching of hit children’s cartoon Dangermouse. In February this year he released a charity single, intertwining Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time with Scott Alan’s Always in aid of the Samaritans. Sung by Sophie Evans and Alice Fearn during their time playing Glinda and Elphaba in Wicked, the track has been listened to over 100,000 times on streaming services and raised hundreds of pounds for the charity.
